Meet Theory Girl Laura

Dr. Laura Engelbrecht is a researcher at ETH studying various topics gravity, cosmology, and quantum field theory. She is particularly interested in trying to understand the nature of dark energy, one of the biggest mysteries in physics.

This is an exciting time to be working in this field, as newly developed tools are allowing scientists to observe the mechanics of our universe with greater accuracy and precision than ever before. With the 2017 Nobel Prize-winning detection of gravitational waves a whole new method of exploring the universe is opening up. Soon, we may finally be able to gain new insights into questions that have been plaguing physicists for decades.

Prior to her doctoral work, Laura received a masters degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Cornell University and a bachelors in physics from Hendrix College.

Laura has always been active in finding ways to build community and support for women and minorities in STEM fields and standing up for women’s rights. In 2017, Laura worked with her officemate Klaountia to organize the Women’s March on Cleveland with over 15,000 participants.
